01 When used tires win

You are selling or trading the vehicle soon. Paying for 70,000 miles of tread you will never drive is a donation to the next owner.
One tire was damaged and the other three are mid-life. Matching a used tire to the tread depth of the survivors beats putting one brand-new tire on an old axle.
The budget is real. A safe, inspected used set today beats bald tires for another two months while you save up. Bald tires are the most expensive option on this page.
Older commuter cars. A 15-year-old sedan doing short city trips does not need flagship rubber.

02 When new tires are worth it

Daily highway miles. Heat plus speed is exactly where fresh, full-depth tread and an intact warranty earn their price.
Towing and hauling. Load capacity is not the place to economize.
Wet-weather grip. Stopping distance in rain is directly tied to tread depth. If the vehicle carries your family every day, that is the line item that matters.
You keep vehicles for years. Cost per mile favors new when you will actually use the whole tread life.

03 How a shop judges a used tire

What we check before a used tire touches a vehicle, and what you should ask about anywhere you shop: tread depth of 6/32" or better, wear that is even across the face, no repairs in the shoulder or sidewall, no dry-rot cracking, and a manufacturing date that is not geriatric. A used tire that passes all five is a legitimately good product. One that fails any of them does not go on your car, at least not here.

THE SIMPLE MATH A new tire is mostly a purchase of tread depth. If a used tire has 60% of its tread at 50% of the price, and it passes inspection, the value is real. If it has 40% of its tread at 70% of the price, walk away.

An inspected used tire with healthy, even tread and no structural damage is safe. The word doing the work in that sentence is inspected. Buy them from a shop that checks, not a stack in a parking lot.

How much tread should a used tire have?

We look for 6/32 of an inch or better. New tires start around 10/32 to 12/32, and 2/32 is legally worn out.

Can I mix a used tire with my existing tires?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses for one: matching the remaining tread on your other tires so all four wear together.
